General Information on Norpramin

Norpramin is a tricyclic antidepressant. This drug is used for treating depression. The generic name of this drug is Desipramine.

This drug works by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters. You can buy Norpramin in form of oral tablets that come in following strengths: 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg, 100 mg, and 150 mg.

Side effects of Norpramin

Norpramin, like other antidepressants, may cause certain side effects. In some cases, this drug may cause serious side effects. It is recommended that you discuss the risks associated with Norpramin with your doctor before starting treatment.

You should not buy Norpramin if:

  • You have a known hypersensitivity to Desipramine
  • You suffered a cardiac attack in recent past
  • You have used an monoamine oxidase inhibitor (for example phenelzine, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine, rasagiline, or selegiline) in last 2 weeks (14 days)

Prior to starting treatment, you should inform your doctor about your medical history. Your doctor may decide against using Desipramine, adjust its dosage, or ask you to take certain tests to evaluate the safety of the drug in your case if you have or have had any of the following:

  • Liver disease
  • Any mental disease such as schizophrenia
  • Glaucoma
  • Overactive thyroid
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Heart disease, seizure, heart attack, or stroke
  • Diabetes

Dosage of Norpramin

The recommended daily dosage range in adult patients is Norpramin 100 mg to Norpramin 200 mg. Patients who are severely ill may be given an increased dosage of Norpramin 300 mg daily. Daily dosage in excess of 300 mg is not recommended. The actual maintenance dosage may be different for different individuals. Your doctor is likely to start treatment with a lower dosage and, then, may gradually increase the dosage.

The recommended daily dosage range in adolescent and geriatric patients is Norpramin 25 mg to Norpramin 100 mg. Daily dosage of more than 150 mg is not recommended in adolescent and geriatric patients.

Your doctor may ask you take Norpramin once daily or in small separate doses. You should follow your doctor’s instructions and take the medication as prescribed. You should not refrigerate the oral tablets. Store your medication at room temperature below 30°C. Keep Norpramin oral tablets away from children.

Some of the common side effects of Norpramin may include:

  • Dry mouth, constipation, vomitting, unpleasant taste
  • Restlessness, drowsiness, dizziness
  • Blurred vision, ringing in the ears, headache, trouble concentrating
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Breast swelling
  • Seizure
  • Uneven heart rate
  • Unusual weakness, easy bleeding or easy bruising
  • Severe skin rash
  • Thoughts about suicide
  • Involuntary muscle movements in the tongue, eyes, neck, or jaw

Pregnant or lactating women should buy Norpramin only after consulting with their doctor. This is because the safety of this antidepressant in pregnant and breastfeeding women is not known.

Interactions

Certain drugs, such as narcotic pain medications, muscle relaxers, allergy medicines, cold medicines, sedatives, anti-seizure medicines, anti-anxiety medicines, and sleeping pills, may increase the sedative effect of Norpramin. Inform your doctor beforehand if you are taking any of these drugs or if you have taken an SSRI antidepressant (for example paroxetine, citalopram, sertraline, escitalopram, fluvoxamine, or fluoxetine) in last 35 days (5 weeks).

Other drugs that are likely to interact with Norpramin include antiarrhythmic agents (such as propafenone, quinidine, or flecainide) and cimetidine.
