General Information on Nystatin Oral
Nystatin Oral is used for treating fungal infections in the mouth, such as candidiasis in oral cavities. The active ingredient in the medicine is Nystatin, and it belongs to the class of anti-fungal medicines.
The medicine is available in the form of a liquid oral suspension. It works by stopping growth of the fungus responsible for the infection.
This medicine cannot be used for treating fungal infections in the blood.
Side effects of Nystatin Oral
Before you buy Nystatin Oral, inform your doctor if you have allergy to the medicine, or to any of is ingredients. Special tests and dosage adjustments may be needed if you have a kidney disease, HIV or diabetes. Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions.
As this medicine also contains sugar, diabetic patients are usually not recommended to buy Nystatin Oral.
If you wear dentures, make sure to clean them properly during Nystatin Oral treatment.
Some common side effects associated with the drug include the following:
- Nausea or vomiting
- mouth irritation
- stomach upset or diarrhea
Inform your doctor immediately if any of these symptoms become too worse or persist.
Seek immediate medical attention if you develop any of the following serious side effects of the drug:
- Fast heartbeat
- muscle pain
- wheezing
Some patients may also develop an allergic reaction to the medicine, especially if you are using it for the first time. Symptoms of an allergy include hives on body, facial swelling, difficulty breathing or severe dizziness. Inform your doctor immediately if you develop any of these symptoms.
Dosage of Nystatin Oral
A dropper is used to administer Nystatin Oral suspension to infants. Give Nystatin Oral 2ml four times in a day to your child, giving half of the dose through each side of his or her mouth. Avoid feeding your child for at least 5 to 10 minutes after giving the medicine. Nystatin Oral 1ml four times in a day is sufficient for premature babies and low birth weight newborns.
For older children and adults, Nystatin Oral 4 to 6 ml four times in a day is recommended. Retain the medicine in your mouth as long as possible and then swallow it. Do not take the oral suspension with water.
You must continue taking the medicine for the full period of treatment, even if the symptoms of infection disappear. The symptoms may disappear, but the infection may not have healed completely. If you stop taking the medicine before the full period of prescription, the infection may return back with more intensity. Also inform your doctor if your condition does not get improved even after the entire period of prescription.
Drug Interactions of Nystatin Oral
Do not take Nystatin Oral along with any other antifungal medicines, whether oral, topical or in injection form. In addition to these, inform your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking at present, including nutritional supplements and herbal products.
