General Information on Nystatin Topical
Nystatin Topical is used for treating fungal infections on the skin. The active ingredient in the medicine is Nystatin, and it belongs to the class of antifungals.
The medicine is available in the form of a topical application. You have to apply it directly on the infected area of your skin.
The medicine works by slowing and stopping the growth of fungus responsible for the infection. You cannot buy Nystatin Topical to treat fungal infections on vagina or on any other part, or to treat a bacterial or yeast infection on the skin.
Side effects of Nystatin Topical
Do not buy Nystatin Topical if you have allergy to it, or to any other ingredient in the medicine. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may be noticed, which include hives on body, severe dizziness, facial swelling and breathing problems.
This medicine is for topical use only, and you should avoid getting it in contact with your eyes, nose, mouth or vagina. If this happens, wash the area thoroughly with running water. If the irritation persists, seek help from your doctor as soon as possible.
Nystatin Topical may increase your skin’s sensitivity to sun. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, tanning booths, sunlamps or other sources of UV light. Do not forget to apply sunscreen on your skin and wear protective clothes before going out.
Before starting treatment with Nystatin Topical, it would be better to take a patch test. For this, apply a small amount of medicine on a small part of your healthy skin. Check the area after 24 hours. If no inflammation, swelling, blistering or pain develops, you can continue using the medicine.
Mild skin irritation or redness may happen after applying the medicine. These are mild side effects of the drug and are easily tolerable. But inform your doctor immediately if any of these persist or worsen.
Dosage of Nystatin Topical
Your doctor will usually prescribe you to apply Nystatin Topical on the affected area twice in a day for 2 weeks. Apply it on the affected area, and also some of the surrounding area too. Do not forget to wash your hands before and after applying the medicine. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve even after 2 weeks of treatment.
Use the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Applying more medicine than prescribed or more times in a day will not help in improving the condition any faster. It will only worsen the condition and increase risks of developing serious side effects of the drug.
Do not cover the area after applying the medicine with a bandage or wrap, unless your doctor advises you to do so. If you are using the medicine on the diaper area of an infant, do not use plastic pants or tight diapers during treatment with Nystatin Topical.
Drug Interactions of Nystatin Topical
Do not use any cosmetic products on the infected area, without consulting with your doctor.
