Basic Information On Omnipaque
Omnipaque is a non-ionic contrast agent which is used in coronary angiography. It is also used in myelography, nephroangiography, arteriography, arthrography and several radiographic procedures. The ionic (organic) compounds block the x-rays when they pass across the body. This results in the delineating of the body structures that contain iodine. In contrast to this, it does not delineate the body structures which do not have iodine. The volume/ amount/ concentration of the iodinated contrast-agent (in the x-ray pathway) determine the degree of the opacity that these compounds produce. Once the brand or generic Omnipaque is administered into the subarachnoid space via the intrathecal route, the drug gets diffuses in the CSF. This causes the visualization of the spinal cord and head or other vessels, when injected intravascularly.
Precautions / Side Effects For Omnipaque
When Omnipaque is administered for genitourinary procedures then it may lead to injuries of the bladder, urethra or ureter. It may also induce infections in these areas. Other side effects include back pain, severe stomach pain, severe abdominal pain, shock and renal colic because of instilling excess amount of contrast solution. Iohexol may also lead to allergic reactions such as continuous fever, chills, increased sweating, sneezing, wheezing, hives, thickening of tongue, trouble in breathing, tightness of the chest and swelling of the face, larynx or skin.
Other common side effects of Iohexol are drowsiness, nausea, vomiting and fever. The drug should not be administered in pregnant women via the intrauterine route. The radiation may affect the fetus. In breast feeding women the drug may cause medical problems such as acute pelvic inflammation (for hysteron-salpingography) and infection of the genital tract. Omnipaque Dosage
The recommended dose of Omnipaque (350 mg I/mL) in coronary arteriography is 25-50 mL (0.7-3.5 gl) and for left ventriculography is 25-50 mL (8.75-17.5 gl). The maximum dose is 250 mL. For aortic bifurcation 45-100 mL (26-70 gl) of the drug is administered through femoral or subclavian artery. For cerebral arteriography 8-12 mL (2.4-3.6 gl) is injected. Total dose of 150 mL should not be exceeded. For CECT of head 100-200 mL (30-60 gl) of Omnipaque drug (300 mg I/mL) or 86-172 mL (for 350 mg I/mL) is administered. A maximum dose of 200 mL should not be exceeded. For CECT of body 50-200 mL (15-60 gl) for injection 300 mg I/mL or 43-172 mL for injection 350 mg I/mL is administered. The maximum dose is 200 mL.
