General Information on Optimyxin Eye/Ear
Optimyxin Eye/Ear is used for treating certain infections caused by susceptible bacteria in the ear or eye. The active ingredients in the medicine are Polymyxin B sulfate and Gramicidin.
The medicine is available in the form of eye/ear drops, and it belongs to the class of antibiotics.
It works by killing or fighting against the susceptible bacteria, so that infection can be caused.
Side effects of Optimyxin Eye/Ear
Do not buy Optimyxin Eye/Ear drops if you have allergy to any of its ingredients. Otherwise, an allergic reaction can get triggered, symptoms of which include hives on any part or on entire body, severe dizziness, breathing problems and facial swelling. Always look out for such symptoms, especially if you are using the medicine for the first time. Stop using the medicine if you develop any of these symptoms. Seek immediate medical attention if they do not subside even after discontinuing the medicine.
This medicine is excreted through the patient’s kidneys. Elderly patients have decreased kidney functioning. Therefore, such patients should be prescribed to take lower dose of the medicine, as compared to healthy adults.
Using Optimyxin Eye/Ear drops for a long time or for repeated periods may cause resistance to the medicine in your body. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve within a few days of treatment.
Mild irritation may occur in the eye or ear to be treated. Small discharge may also be noticed out of the eye or ear. These are common side effects of the drug and have nothing to worry about. But you should notify your doctor at once if any of these persist or worsen.
Optimyxin Eye/Ear drops may increase your sensitivity to light. Avoid going out in the sun. If going out is inevitable, it would be better to wear goggles all the time.
Dosage of Optimyxin Eye/Ear
Each ml of Optimyxin Eye/Ear drops contains 10,000IU of polymyxin B sulfate and 0.025mg of gramicidin. Other ingredients involved in the medicine include benzalkonium chloride and ethyl alcohol as preservatives.
Usually, your doctor will prescribe you to apply one or two drops in the affected eye or ear four times in a day. Try to apply the drops at almost the same times each day. However, the dosage and frequency of applying the drops and duration of the treatment depends on the patient’s body weight and other medical conditions he or she is suffering from. It also depends on the type and severity of ear or eye infection the patient has.
