General Information on Optimyxin Ophthalmic

Optimyxin Ophthalmic is used for treating certain eye infections caused by bacteria, such as conjunctivitis. The active ingredients in the medicine are Bacitracin Zinc and Polymyxin B sulfate. It comes under the class of antibiotics.

The medicine is available in the form of eye ointment. It works by fighting against the bacteria responsible for causing the infection. It interferes with the growth and spread of the susceptible bacteria, thereby treating the infection.

Side effects of Optimyxin Ophthalmic

Patients with hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the medicine should not buy Optimyxin Ophthalmic. The medicine may also contain preservatives that may cause a serious allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergy include difficulty breathing, facial swelling, severe dizziness or hives on body. Inform your doctor immediately if you develop any of these symptoms. Also discontinue using the medicine at once.

Mild itching, stinging, irritation, pain or discharge may be noticed after applying Optimyxin Ophthalmic in the eye. These are common side effects of the drug and can be easily managed with or without medical help. However, you should notify your doctor at once if any of these worsen or persist.

Remove your contact lenses, if you are wearing any, before applying Optimyxin Opthalmic. Do not re-insert them before at least 15 minutes of applying the medicine. Preservatives in the medicine may cause damage to your lenses, the medicine may not spread properly in your eye and irritation may also take place if you apply the medicine without removing contact lenses.

Your vision may become temporarily blurred and unstable after applying the medicine. This side effect lasts for around 2-3. During this period, you should avoid driving a vehicle or doing any such activity that needs clear vision. Otherwise, a serious mishap can take place.

Using the medicine for too long or for repeated periods may cause resistance in your eye. After this, the medicine may not affect your bacterial infection, or a large dosage may be needed. You should inform your doctor at once if no signs of improvement are noticed even after 2 days of starting the treatment.

Dosage of Optimyxin Ophthalmic

Each gram of Optimyxin Ophthalmic contains 10,000 units of Polymyxin B sulfate and 500 units of Bacitracin Zinc. Other ingredients in the medicine include petrolatum and light mineral oil.

Usually, your doctor will recommend you apply Optimyxin Ophthalmic 4 times in a day, at equal intervals of time. Try to apply the medicine at almost the same times each day.

Use the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Using it more than prescribed or more times in a day does not help in healing the infection any faster. It will only worsen the condition and increase risks of developing some serious side effects.

Drug Interactions of Optimyxin Ophthalmic

Before you buy Optimyxin Ophthalmic, inform your doctor about all the oral or topical antibiotics you are using at present. Also tell him or her about all the eye drops or ointments you use, including herbal preparations. Based on this, he or she will be able to decide whether this medicine is right for you or not.
