General Information on Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear
Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear drops is used for treating certain bacterial infections in eyes or ears. The medicine is a combination of Neomycin and Polymyxin B, and it belongs to the class of antibacterials.
The medicine is available in the form of eye or ear drops. It works by killing the bacteria responsible for causing the infection.
Side effects of Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear
You should not buy Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear drops if you have allergy to Neomycin, Polymyxin B, any of the ingredients in the medicine, or to any aminoglycosides such as gentamicin. Also inform your doctor if you have perforation of tympanic membrane in the ear to be treated, chronic otitis media or middle ear infection or pre-existing nerve deafness. This medicine is not meant to be used on patients less than 2 years of age.
The medicine may get absorbed into your blood stream and may cause bladder irrigation solution.
Using Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear drops for a long time or for repeated times may worsen your condition and may even lead to a new infection in your eyes or ears. Therefore, inform your doctor beforehand if you have already used this medicine in the past or if you are already using it to treat same or another condition.
Some common side effects associated with Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear drops include pain or itching in the eye or ear to be treated. Inform your doctor at once if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.
You should inform your doctor as soon as possible if you develop any serious side effects of the drug. Such symptoms include:
- Redness, swelling or redness in the eye, that was not there before starting treatment with the medicine
- loss of hearing
- burning or stinging in the inner ear
Some patients may also develop an allergic reaction to the medicine. Symptoms of such a condition include severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, hives on body or swelling or itching on face, throat, lips or tongue. Stop using the medicine at once if you encounter any of these symptoms. Seek medical attention without fail if any of these symptoms persist even after discontinuing the medicine.
Dosage of Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear
Each ml of Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear drops contains 10,000 units of Polymyxin B sulfate, 0.025mg of Gramicidin and 1.75mg of Neomycin. The medicine also contains benzalkonium chloride and ethyl alcohol as preservatives.
Your doctor will recommend you to apply one or two drops in the affected ear or eye 2 to 4 times in a day. However, the amount and frequency of application depends on the type and severity of infection, your age and body weight, other medical conditions you are suffering from and other medicines you are taking at present.
Do not forget to wash your hands properly before applying Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear drops. Also make sure that the dropper tip does not touch any surface, including your eyes, ears or fingers.
Drug Interactions of Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear
Do not buy Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear drops if you are already using neuromuscular blocking agents such as pancuronium or tubocurarine. Inform your doctor about all the other medicines you are using at present, including eye/ear drops or ointments or herbal preparations.
