General Information on Panacur
Panacur is the trade name for Fenbendazole which belongs to the anthelmintics class of drugs. This drug is registered to be used in animals. Although this drug is available over the counter, you should buy Panacur only under guidance of a veterinarian.
This antiparasitic drug is usually used to eradicate different gastrointestinal parasites from the intestines and stomach of small and large animals like dogs, cats and farm livestock. This drug is quite effective against hookworms, roundworms, whipworms as well as against certain tapeworms. Panacaur is also effective against parasites that belong to the family of Strongylidae and Strongyloididae and against few parasites of lungs and bronchial tree such as Paragonimiasis and Aelurostrongylus.
Panacur works by blocking the polymerization process that leads to conversion of tubulin to microtubules. This leads to integrity damage and cell transport function in parasites.
You can buy Panacur in form of oral liquid suspension, powdered granules or paste. Panacur suspension and granules are available in strength, 222 mg/gm. The paste is available in strength, 100mg/gm.
The active ingredient in all forms of Panacur is the same. However, the inactive ingredients used in different forms may vary slightly. The inactive ingredients used in oral suspension are: methylparaben, silicon dioxide, povidone, propylparaben, trisodium citrate dihydrate, water, citric acid monohydrate, and carboxymethylcellulose sodium.
Side effects of Panacur
Panacur may sometimes lead to the following side effects in large and small animals :
- Stomach upset
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Heavy breathing
- Swelling of face
- Itching
Diarrhea has also been reported in few cases. This occurs due to the irritation caused by worms in the gastrointestinal tract. If diarrhea is bloody or becomes severe, inform your veterinarian about it.
If the animals seem lethargic or severely sick after use of Panacur, you should immediately consult your veterinarian.
This drug is considered safe for the pregnant pets. There are zero associated birth defects reported. With that said, it is always better to consult a veterinarian before administering Panacur to a pregnant pet.
You should not buy Panacur for animals that are allergic or hypersensitive to this medicine.
Dosage of Panacur
While household pets are usually given the medication in form of granules or liquid, farm animals are administered the paste formulation. The powder form can be mixed with food while the paste and liquid are given directly to animals.
The dosage of Panacur is determined by the weight of the animal. For cats and dogs, the effective dosage is either Panacur 25 mg/pound or Panacur 50 mg/kg daily for three consecutive days.
Panacur normally is not effective with a single dose. It is recommended that you administer this drug once a day for several days in a row. The duration of administration depends on the condition of the animal that is to be treated, animal’s response to medication, and development of adverse effects if any. It is best that you administer the drug for full prescribed treatment period or as directed in the manufacturer's package instructions.
You should store the medication at room temperature. Keep Panacur away from the reach of children.

Panacur is reported to have no known drug interaction with other medicines in large and small animals.
