The drug is an anti-cholinergic and an anti-histamine drug which stabilizes the mast cell. Patanol is a prescription drug and is available as sterile ophthalmic solution (eye drops) for topical use only. It is used in the treatment of reddening, watering and itching in the eye which is caused due to certain allergies; for example allergic eye-reaction observed in hay fever. It is also indicated in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. Patanol drug acts on the mast cells by inhibiting the release/discharge of histamines. It also inhibits the secretion of cytokine. It stops the de-granulation of the mast cells. Thus, it reduces the hypersensitivity reactions, inflammation and itching. It also inhibits the effects of histamine on conjunctival cells.
Precautions / Side Effects for Patanol Eye Drops
Common side effects of Patanol Eye Drops include redness or dryness in the eye, blurred vision, feeling of foreign body in the eye, headache, rhinitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, changes in taste, asthenia, pruritus, keratitis, hyperemia and edema or swelling of the eye lids. If any of the above mentioned effects worsen or prolong, then let your physician or health care provider know about it. There may be certain allergic reactions with Olapatadine such as swelling in the mouth, throat or face, dizziness, hives and difficulty in breathing. If you experience any of these allergic reactions then seek medical attention immediately.
Other side effects of Olapatadine that are rare in occurrence include sore throat, weakness without any reason and running nose. Patanol Eye Drops Dosage
In the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis and management of its signs and symptoms, the recommended dose of Patanol eye drops 0.1% is 1 drop in the affected eye (or both the eyes), as directed by the ophthalmologist. The drug is administered typically twice a day. A minimum interval of 6-8 hours must be maintained between two doses. While administering the drug care should be taken that the tip of the dropper does not touch the eye, eye lids or the surrounding areas of the affected eye.
