General Information on Periactin
Periactin is used to treat signs of allergies such as itching, runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes and other symptoms. It is also indicated in the treatment of hay fever caused by allergies (perennial allergic rhinitis) and seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride, the main active ingredient in the medication, is a sedating antihistamine. It blocks histamine H1 receptors in the body. Histamine is a natural substance produced by the body in response to allergies. It is known to cause release of other chemicals in the body that cause various symptoms of allergies. By preventing the bonding of histamine to its receptors, it stops the release of chemicals that cause allergy symptoms.
Periactin is available in the form of a tablet. Each Periactin tablet contains 4mg Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride. The drug is a prescription medication, so you can buy Periactin only if it is recommended by your doctor.
Side effects of Periactin
Periactin may cause mild to severe side effects in some people. Dosage of Periactin
Your doctor will give you specific instructions regarding the dosage. The dosage of Periactin is individualized. The recommended adult dosage is in the range of 4mg to 20mg daily. The anti-allergic effect of the medication remains for around 4 to 6 hours, so you would need to take around 3 doses daily.
Doctors generally start the treatment with an initial dose of one Periactin 4mg tablet three times daily. The dosage is adjusted as per the weight of the patient and response to therapy.
Interactions
Periactin may potentially interact with other medicines you are using and cause side effects. It may interact with drugs such as sleeping tablets, barbiturates, antipsychotic medicines, Benzodiazepines, anticholinergic medicines for Parkinson's symptoms and urinary incontinence, strong opioid painkillers, tricyclic antidepressants, MAOI antidepressants, sedating antihistamines, or antispasmodics.
