General Information on Phenergan
Phenergan is indicated for the treatment of allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, hives, runny nose, skin rashes, and watery or itchy eyes. It is also used to prevent motion sickness and treat vomiting and nausea after surgery. Phenergan is also used as a sleep aid or sedative.
Promethazine, the main active ingredient in the drug, is an antihistamine. It blocks the histamine H1 receptor cells. Histamine is a natural substance that is released by mast cells which play an important role in managing the symptoms of allergic reactions. By preventing histamine from bonding with histamine H1 receptors, Phenergan suppresses the action of Histamine.
Phenergan is available in the form of a tablet and a suppository. The Phenergan tablet is available in three strengths- 12.5 mg, 25 mg, or 50 mg. The suppository is indicated for renal use only and is available in three strengths- 12.5 mg, 25 mg, or 50 mg. The drug is a prescription medication, which means you should buy Phenergan in any form only if it is recommended by your doctor.
Side effects of Phenergan
Some people may experience mild to severe side effects after taking a dose of Phenergan. Blurred vision, weight gain, impotence, constipation, anxiety, dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, ringing in your ears, trouble having an orgasm, swelling in your feet and hands, and a stuffy nose are some less severe side effects associated with the drug. These side effects wane over time. However, if they persist or become bothersome, consult your doctor immediately.
Phenergan may also cause severe side effects in some people. Involuntary movements of your legs, arms, lips, face, eyes, or tongue, feeling agitated/jittery/restless, high fever, seizure, tremors, trouble swallowing, drooling, feeling like you might pass out, easy bleeding/bruising, stiff muscles, and rapid breathing are some severe side effects associated with Phenergan.
You may also experience severe side effects such as sweating, problems with walking or balance, confusion, uneven or fast heartbeat, sore throat, decreased night vision, hallucinations, tunnel vision, increased sensitivity to light, stomach pain, yellowing of the eyes or skin, agitation, watery eyes, flu symptoms, or skin rash. This is not a complete list of the severe side effects of Phenergan.
Other severe side effects associated with Phenergan include urinating less than usual or not at all, chest pain, swollen glands, unusual behavior or thoughts, joint pain or swelling with fever, patchy skin color, muscle aches, weak pulse, vomiting, slow heart rate/breathing, or fainting. Stop using the medication and consult your doctor immediately if you notice or experience severe side effects after taking a dose of Phenergan.
Dosage of Phenergan
The doctor may recommend a single oral dose of 25mg before bedtime or a dose in the range of 6.25 to 12.5mg three times daily with meals. The recommended oral dose of Phenergan to prevent motion sickness is 25mg two times daily. The first dose should be taken at least one hour or 30 minutes before traveling. You may be required to take the next dose 8 to 12 hours after the initial dose. You will be required to take 25mg dose in the evening and 25mg dose in the evening while traveling.
Interactions
Phenergan may potentially interact with other medicines you are taking and cause side effects. It may interact with drugs such as anticholinergic medicines for Parkinson's symptoms, MAOI antidepressants, certain antihistamines, and certain anti-sickness medicines.
Phenergan may also interact with specific antipsychotic medicines, antispasmodic medicines, and drugs for urinary incontinence.
