General Information on Potiga
Potiga is used for treating partial seizures in patients with epilepsy. The active ingredient in the medicine is Ezogabine, and it belongs to the class of neuronal potassium channel openers.
Potiga works as an anticonvulsant, as it reduces excitability by stabilizing neuronal potassium channels in open positions. The drug is given to the patient in the form of oral tablets.
Side effects of Potiga
Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Potiga if you have difficulty urinating, enlarged prostate, liver or kidney disease, alcohol abuse, mood problem, depression, heart problem, long QT syndrome or low magnesium or potassium levels in the blood.
Potiga commonly causes double vision, blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness in patients. Therefore, you should avoid operating a machine, driving a vehicle, or performing any such task that requires complete alertness and clear vision. Otherwise, a serious mishap may take place.
Potiga may make it difficult for you to urinate. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Inability to start urinating
- Trouble emptying the bladder
- Weak stream of urine
- Pain while urinating
Potiga may also cause mental or psychiatric problems in some patients. Symptoms of such a condition include:
- Confusion
- Aggressiveness, hostility, irritability or anger
- Psychosis or hallucinations
- Being distrustful or suspicious
- Extreme changes in mood or behavior
Like other anti-epileptic medicines, Potiga may also lead to suicidal thoughts and attempts in a minority of patients. Inform your doctor immediately if you develop any of the following symptoms:
- New or worsening depression or anxiety
- Panic attack
- Feelings of restlessness or agitation
- Insomnia
- New or worsening irritability
- Feelings of aggressiveness or anger or actions of violence
- Extreme increase in talking and activity (mania)
Other common side effects associated with Potiga include somnolence, spinning sensation or vertigo, trouble concentrating, problems with muscle and balance coordination, including trouble moving and walking, memory problems, tremors and extreme weakness.
Dosage of Potiga
Initially, you will be advised to take Potiga 300mg per day, divided into 3 equal doses. The dosage can be increased gradually, until it reaches the maintenance dosage of Potiga 200 to 400mg three times in a day.
You can take the tablets with or without meals. Try to take them at the same time each day. You will be advised to swallow the tablet whole, without crushing, breaking or dissolving it.
If you need to discontinue taking Potiga, your doctor will advise you to decrease the dosage gradually instead of stopping the drug at once. This may lead to severe withdrawal symptoms.
Drug Interactions of Potiga
Before you buy Potiga, inform your doctor if you are already taking medicines such as digoxin, phenytoin or carbamazepine.
As this drug causes dizziness, do not take it along with other medicines that cause the same effect, including sedatives, narcotic pain relievers, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medicines, or tranquilizers.
