Basic Information On Precedex
Precedex belongs to the class of drugs called hypnotics and sedatives. It is used as a sedative in patients who are on ventilator (mechanical or intubated ventilators) in the intensive care unit/setting (ICU). As a sedative the drug is used prior to surgery or during a surgery. The drug is a selective and specific agonist of alpha-2 adrenoceptor. Thus it acts by inhibiting the release of nor-epinephrine which helps in terminating the transmission of pain signal. Thus, it decreases the sympathetic tone. It has an analgesic and anxiolytic effect. This helps in minimizing the cardiovascular response during the peri-operative period. Brand or generic Precedex also reduces the analgesic, anesthetic and sedative needs of the patient while ensuring that respiratory depression is not caused.
