Prepidil is a prostaglandin which is a hormone-like compound. It is produced naturally by the tissues of the body. The drug is in form of a gel and is meant for topical use which is administered intra-vaginally. The drug is used in pregnant women and helps in relaxing the muscles of the cervix (uterus opening). This is desirable to prepare for the labor induction towards the end of pregnancy (obstetrical need). The drug is used to ripen the unfavorable cervix of pregnant women towards the end of the term. Prepidil Dosage
Prepidil is administered with the help of a sterile syringe containing 2.5 ml of the drug. The gel is introduced into the cervical canal with the help of a catheter and the patient should remain in the supine position for about 15 to 30 minutes to avoid any leakage of the drug from the cervix. If the patient’s response is not satisfactory then 0.5 mg dosage of the gel may be repeated, but only after a 6 hour interval. It is recommended that the intravenous oxytocin should be administered only 6 to 12 hours after the administration of Prepidil drug.
