Prevacid belongs to the category of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPI). It blocks the acid producing enzymes in the walls of the stomach. It diffuses into the parietal cell of the stomach and accumulates in the secretory canaliculi. It is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. These diseases are caused by the backward flow of acid from the stomach which leads to food- pipe injury and heartburn. A decrease in the stomach acid cures these diseases and heals the stomach and esophagus. The Prevacid drug reduces the risk of Duodenal Ulcer and maintains the healed ulcers. Precautions / Side Effects Of Prevacid
Prevacid contain Lansoprazole. It is used in combination with antibiotics. Hence, you should take all your medicines as directed by your doctor. Brand or generic Prevacid does not provide instant relief from heartburn. You should take note of symptoms like nausea, chest pain, a feeling of heaviness, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder and a general ill feeling. Benign gastric ulcer is treated by a 30 mg daily dose taken for 8 weeks. NSAID associated gastric ulcer is healed by a 30 mg daily dose taken for 8 weeks, followed by a 15 mg daily dose for risk reduction, taken for up to 12 weeks. This orally disintegrating tablet should be taken before eating. You should not crush or chew the capsules.
