General Information on Preventic
Preventic is a dog collar that is used to prevent, kill and detach ticks. The active ingredient in the medicine is Amitraz, and it belongs to the category of anti-parasitic drugs or MAO inhibitors.
The dog collar is put around the dog’s neck. While doing this, you must make sure that it comes in contact with the pet’s skin completely.
Preventic lasts for around 3 months. It prevents the attachment of new ticks to the skin and also reduces their ability to feed. The medicine becomes effective within 48 hours of application. However, you must remember that Preventic is meant to be used only on dogs, and not on other pets including cats.
Preventic works by paralyzing the mouths of ticks. In this way, the ticks are detached and the transmission of a tick-borne disease is prevented. The collar can also be used for controlling mites, lice and other such pests. It is highly effective in preventing major tick-borne diseases, including Lyme Disease, Rickettsia and Babesiosis.
Side effects of Preventic
While fastening Preventic collar on your dog, do not forget to wear rubber gloves, especially if you have diabetes or if you are already taking a MAO inhibitor.
Preventic is only to be used externally. It should not be ingested. Do not allow children to handle the collar, as the components may get absorbed into their skin and cause moderate irritation. If your skin comes in contact with Preventic, you should wash the area thoroughly with soap and water. Also wash your hands after putting the collar on your dog.
Before you buy Preventic dog collar, you should inform the veterinarian if your pet is aged, nursing, pregnant, debilitated or medicated. Do not use the collar on puppies that are below 12 weeks of age.
Some pets may develop an allergic reaction to Preventic. Symptoms of such a condition include:
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling on the face or tongue
- Loss of breath
- Hives on the body
Inform the veterinarian immediately if your pet develops any of these symptoms. He or she may advise you to remove the collar and discontinue using it.
Dosage of Preventic
If your dog is more than 12 weeks of age and its neck is 18" or smaller, you will be advised to buy Preventic 18" collar. If your dog’s neck is more than 18" in diameter, the veterinarian will advise you to use Preventic 25" collar. Ensure that it has been buckled properly and that any excess has been trimmed off.
You should remove Preventic whenever you give a bath to your pet. You can reapply it after your pet is completely dried. Check the collar every now and then to ensure that it has not become loose. Re-adjust it whenever needed.
Once you have put Preventic dog collar on your pet, do not remove it, except while giving it a bath.
Interactions
Do not use Preventic on pets who are already on antidepressants. Also do not use Preventic if your dog is on any other MAO inhibitors..
