General Information on Procan SR
Procan SR is used for treating certain abnormal heart rhythms like early ventricular and atrial beats, intermittent atrial fibrillation, and ventricular tachycardia. The generic name of this drug is Procainamide. It falls in a category of drugs referred as antiarrhythmic drugs.
Procan SR is administered orally. You can buy Procan SR in form of oral tablets, which are available in following strengths, Procan SR 500 mg, 750 mg, and 1000 mg.
The following nonmedical ingredients are used in all different strengths of Procan SR oral tablets are: carnauba wax, calcium silicate, dimethyl polysiloxane fluid, diethyl phthalate, vanillin, magnesium stearate, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.
Side effects of Procan SR
You should not use this drug if you have or have had Long QT Syndrome or lupus. Procan SR is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to Procainamide or any other ingredient present in the drug. If you experience an allergic reaction after using this drug, immediately consult your physician. Symptoms that accompany an allergic reaction include: hives, trouble breathing, facial flushness, closing of the throat, swelling of the throat, lips, or tongue, skin rashes, or wheezing.
Special monitoring may be required in patients with certain medical conditions. Tell your physician if you have/have had:
- Liver disease
- Asthma
- Kidney disease
- Myasthenia gravis
- Heart attack
- Chronic heart failure
- Blood circulation disorder
- Allergy to aspirin
Less serious side effects associated with Procan SR may include:
- Mild itching
- Dizziness
- Tired feeling
- Diarrhea, upset stomach
If you experience any of these side effects and they are severe, you should inform your physician.
The following serious side effects are associated with Procan SR:
- Severe dizziness

- Symptoms of an infection like sore throat, fever, easy bruising, chills, easy bleeding, nausea, mouth sores, unusual weakness, vomitting, loss of appetite
- Chest pain
- Worsening or a new irregular heart beat
- Symptoms of liver damage like yellow eyes or skin, loss of appetite, stomach pain, vomitting, dark urine, nausea
- Hallucinations, depressed mood
- Joint pain
You must consult your physician if you experience any of the aforementioned side effects during treatment.
If you are pregnant or lactating, always consult a doctor before using this antiarrhythmic drug as its safety in pregnant and breastfeeding women is not known.
Dosage of Procan SR
Adult patients who have normal renal function are usually administered a starting dosage of Procan SR 50 mg/kg, divided in small dosages and administered every 6 hours. Geriatric patients or adult patients with cardiac, renal, or hepatic insufficiency may be administered a lower starting dosage or administered the recommended dosage of 50 mg/kg over a longer period.
You should not refrigerate the oral tablets. Instead, store them at room temperature between 20°-30°C. You must ensure that you store your medication in a safe place, away from reach of children.
