General Information on Profender
Profender is used for treating roundworm, tapeworm, and hookworm infections in cats that are of or above 8 weeks of age or more and weigh 1kg or more. The generic name of this drug is Praziquantel and Emodepside. This drug is available in form of a topical solution.
Profender is a clear yellow solution that contains 1.98% of Emodepside and 7.94% of Praziquantel. The two active ingredients work by killing the gastrointestinal worms. You should buy Profender only if a veterinarian has prescribed this drug for your pet.
Side effects of Profender
Profender may cause certain side effects. It is necessary that you discuss the risks and benefits associated with Profender before administering it to your pet. You should not buy Profender if your pet has a known allergy to any of the ingredients used in this topical drug. Watch out for early signs of allergic reaction if your pet is receiving Profender for the first time. The following symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction: facial swelling, skin rashes or severe irritation, redness, or swelling at the application site.
Other side effects of this drug are: salivation, agitation, nervousness, lethargy, licking, scratching the treatment area, or alopecia. Consult your veterinarian if any of these side effects are severe.
In rare cases, Profender may cause the following serious side effects: tremors, eye irritation, diarrhea, dehydration, respiratory irritation, loss of appetite, or vomiting. You must inform your veteriniarian immediately if your pet show experiences any of the aforementioned side effects.
Profender is expected to be safe for lactating and pregnant pets. With that said, it is necessary that consult your veterinarian before administering this drug to a pet that is pregnant or lactating.
Profender is not listed for human use. Keep this drug out of reach of young children. Serious side effects may occur if the drug is ingested by a human. Consult a doctor if your child, or someone else, accidently ingests Profender.
You must wash your hands thoroughly after and before applying this topical solution to your pet. If you have a known hypersensitivity to Praziquantel, Butylhydroxyanisole, or Emodepside, you should exercise extra caution while administering this drug.
Dosage of Profender
Profender is administered topically and is given as a single dosage. The dosage of this drug depends on the weight of the pet. The recommended minimum dosage is 5.45mg/lb of Praziquantel plus 1.36mg/lb of Emodepside.
Administer 0.35 ml of Profender to cats that weigh between 2.2-5.5 lbs, 0.70 ml of Profender to cats that weigh between 5.5-11 lbs, 1.12 ml of Profender to cats that weigh between 11-17.6 lbs. Your veterinarian will show you how to administer the drug. If you have any doubts, speak to your veteriniarian or refer to the manufacturer’s instructions included with the drug.
