Basic Information On Prolia
Prolia is the first agent to be derived biologically. It is a monoclonal anti-body that targets and destroys only certain type of cells. This helps in protecting the healthy cells from getting damaged. The drug has its effects on the immune system of the body. The drug is used in the treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women, especially women who are at higher risk of bone-fractures. Thus, it prevents the breakdown of the bones by the cells. Brand or generic Prolia acts by inhibiting the maturation of cells called osteoclasts (cells that breakdown bones) without affecting the osteoblasts (cells that secrete new bones). Thus, the drug protects the bones from degradation. In this way the drug mimics the osteoprotegerin’s (protein produced by the osteoblasts) endogenous effects.
