Basic Information On Prolia

Prolia is the first agent to be derived biologically. It is a monoclonal anti-body that targets and destroys only certain type of cells. This helps in protecting the healthy cells from getting damaged. The drug has its effects on the immune system of the body. The drug is used in the treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women, especially women who are at higher risk of bone-fractures. Thus, it prevents the breakdown of the bones by the cells. Brand or generic Prolia acts by inhibiting the maturation of cells called osteoclasts (cells that breakdown bones) without affecting the osteoblasts (cells that secrete new bones). Thus, the drug protects the bones from degradation. In this way the drug mimics the osteoprotegerin’s (protein produced by the osteoblasts) endogenous effects.

Precautions / Side Effects For Prolia

Common side effects of Prolia include muscle pain, joint pain, pain in the legs or arms, back pain and constipation. Less serious side effects of the drug may include severe stomach pain (especially upper stomach) that spreads towards the back, nausea, vomiting, fast/slow heart rate, muscle contraction, muscle tightness and overactive reflexes. Upon administering Denosumab, if you experience any of these side effects or if they prolong or worsen, then let your health care provider know immediately.

Serious side effects of brand or generic Prolia may include burning sensation or pain while passing urine, diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, vomiting, tenderness/ swelling/ pain in any part of the body, severe burning/ itching/ dryness/ rashes on the skin, trouble in hearing, ear drainage, ear pain, night sweats, fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, flu-like symptoms, weight loss or red/ purple pin-point spots appearing under the skin. Denosumab may also cause certain allergic reactions such as difficulty in breathing, swelling of the tongue, face, lips or throat and hives.

Prolia Dosage

Prolia is administered in form of a subcutaneous injection. The injection is taken preferably on the upper thigh, upper arm or abdomen. The recommended dose is 60 mg which is taken as a single injection. The drug is administered once in 6 months. It is recommended that patients who are on Prolia drug therapy should also take a minimum of 400 IU vitamin-D and 1000 mg of calcium on a daily basis. The injection should be administered only by a health care provider. Also, if a particular dose is missed then the injection should be administered as soon as possible.
