General Information on Prolopa
Prolopa is the brand name of the generic drugs Levodopa and Benserazide.
This drug is essentially used to treat Parkinson’s disease. It helps control the symptom of this disease by correcting the chemical imbalance in a patient’s brain.
If Levodopa is taken along with Benserazide, it reduces a few side effects such as vomiting and nausea that are usually associated with Levodopa if taken alone.

Side effects of Prolopa
The following less common side effects are reported in at least 1% of patients taking Prolopa:
- Bitter taste and burning sensation in the tongue
- Change in frequency of urination
- Decrease in urine production
- Fatigue and malaise
- Fever
- Hair loss
- Headache
- Muscle spasms
- Stomach problems
The more common side effects that require immediate medical attention are:
- Reduction or total absence of body movements
- Increased blinking
- Inactivity or feeling of dejection
- Inability to move the eyes
- Fearfulness
- Hallucinations
- Severe stomach pain
- Nosebleeds
Dosage of Prolopa
Prolopa is available in three different forms: Prolopa 50-12.5 which contains Levodopa 50 mg and Benserazide 12.5 mg; Prolopa 100-25 which contains Levodopa 100 mg and Benserazide 25 mg, and Prolopa 200-50 which contains Levodopa 200 mg and Benserazide 50 mg.
Prolopa treatment should be started slowly and the dosage increased gradually in order to reduce the risks of side effects and at the same time, help patients achieve the maximum benefits of this drug.
The recommended dose is one capsule, that is Levodopa 100 mg / Benserazide 25 mg once or twice a day. The doctor may increase your prescribed dosage by one capsule over a few days to get the best response. When the dose is maintained, the doctor will increase the dose at an interval of two to four weeks. This dose should be taken at least four times a day immediately after meals. The best dose of this drug is 4 to 8 capsules of Levodopa 100 mg and Benserazide 25 mg daily which is divided into four to six doses.
Initially, Prolopa should be taken along with meals or snacks to effectively reduce chances of a stomach upset. Later, when the patient’s body is accustomed to the medication, Prolopa should be taken on an empty stomach to increase the absorption of the drug by the body.
It is best to take the medication as prescribed by your doctor. If a dose is missed, then a patient should take it as soon as possible and continue with the regular schedule. A patient should avoid taking a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
Patients must not buy Prolopa if they are allergic to this drug. It should also be avoided by patients who have a psychiatric disorder. Prolopa is not recommended for pregnant women and those younger than 25 years of age.
Interactions
Prolopa can interact with other drugs. These include amantadine, anesthetics, dopamine agonists, ferrous sulfate, metoclopramide, phenytoin, selegiline, pyridoxine, sympathomimetic drugs like epinephrine, trihexyphenidyl, and tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline and desipramine. In case of a drug interaction, a patient should consult a doctor before stopping the use of Prolopa altogether.
