General Information on Promethegan
Promethegan is the brand name of promethazine rectal, which belongs to a group of drugs known as phenothiazines.
This drug works by altering the action of chemicals in patient’s brain. Promethegan acts as an antihistamine.
This drug is used to treat allergy symptoms like runny nose, itching, irritation in the eyes, sneezing, and skin rashes.
Promethegan is also useful for preventing motion sickness. Moreover, it can treat nausea, vomiting and pain after surgery. It can even work as a sedative to induce sleep.
Promethegan is not used to treat asthma, pneumonia or other infections of lower respiratory tract.
You must buy Promethegan only with a valid doctor’s prescription. This drug is a rectal suppository which should be stored in the refrigerator.
Side effects of Promethegan
Immediate medical help is needed if the following signs of an allergic reaction occur with Promethegan:
- Hives
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat
- Uncontrollable movement of arms, face, tongue, eyes, lips and legs
- Uncontrolled shaking, trouble swallowing, problems in walking or balancing
- Decreased night vision and increased sensitivity to light
- Urinating less than usual or not at all
- Joint pain or swelling with fever, chest pain, patchy skin color
- Slow heart rate, fainting, slow breathing

- Easy bruising or bleeding, pale skin
The less serious side effects include :
- Sleepiness, dizziness or drowsiness
- Blurred vision and stuffy nose
- Ringing in ears
- Swelling in hands or feet, weight gain
- Impotence, problem having an orgasm
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
Dosage of Promethegan
It is best to use Promethegan or rectal Promethazine as prescribed by the doctor. This medication is neither to be used in larger or smaller amounts, or for a longer period than what was recommended by your doctor.
This medication comes with a patient’s instructions leaflet for using the rectal suppository.
Promethegan is not to be taken by mouth. It is only for administered through the rectum. This is recommended to be done when the bladder and bowel is empty.
Before insertion, the outer wrapper around the medicine must be removed. If handled for a long period, the suppository will melt in hands.
For best results, the patient has to lie down for a few minutes after inserting the suppository and avoid using bathroom just after inserting Promethegan.
In case of a missed dose, the patient should take the medication as soon as he or she remembers. If it is near the time for the next dose, then the prescribed schedule of administration can be followed. Patients must not be administered two doses of this medicine simultaneously.
In case of an overdose, the patient has to seek emergency medical attention. The symptoms of a overdose to Promethegan are dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, shallow breathing, flushing, nausea, large pupils, vomiting and fainting.
Interactions
Promethegan may interact with several drugs, including sedatives, cold or allergy medicines, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicines for depression or seizure. It is better to consult doctor if patient is using the following medicines; lithium, atropine, belladonna, benztropine, dimenhydrinate, methscopolamine or scopolamine. It can also interact with a blood thinner like warfarin, blood pressure medication like guanadrel and propranolol, bronchodilators like ipratropium or tiotropium, urinary medication like oxybutynin and solifenacin, medicines to treat Parkinsonism and medications treating stomach ulcer or irritable bowel syndrome.
