General Information on Proventil
Proventil is a brand name for the active ingredient Albuterol Inhalation. It is a bronchodilator that relaxes airways muscles and increases air flow to the lungs.
Proventil is used to prevent or treat bronchospasm caused by reversible airway disease. It is also used to prevent bronchospasm induced by exercise.
It is important for patients to keep Proventil handy at all times in the event of a bronchospasm attack . Moreover, the patient has to call a doctor if this drug is not working as usual or if it worsens his or her condition.

Side effects of Proventil
The patient should stop using Proventil and seek emergency medical help if any of the following allergic reaction occur.
- Bronchospasm covering chest tightness, trouble breathing and wheezing
- Pounding or uneven heartbeat
- Nervousness or Tremor
- Confusion, extreme thirst, increased urination, muscle weakness
- Dangerous high blood pressure like blurred vision, chest pain, shortness of breath, etc.

- Swelling of mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat
Less serious Proventil side effects are:
- headache, nervousness and dizziness
- Insomnia
- Dry mouth
- Muscle pain
- Diarrhea

- Metabolic – transient lactic acidosis, hypokalemia, hyperglycemia
- Musculoskeletal – tremors and severe muscle cramping
- Nervous system – restlessness, anxiety, nervousness, insomnia and tremor
- Cardiovascular – changes in 20% heart rate
- Psychiatric – persecutory delusions and auditory hallucinations
- Respiratory – paradoxical bronchospasm
An overdose of Proventil can lead to seizure, dizziness, nausea, sweating, chest pain, dry mouth, and other severe side effects.
Dosage of Proventil
Proventil should be used only as prescribed. If taken in larger amounts, it may lead to asthma-related death. When using this inhaler device for first time, the patient has to spray four test sprays into the air, away from his or her face. The device has to be shaken before priming.
Patient can either use the inhaler or use the solution with a nebulizer. The method, daily frequency and total duration of dosage with Proventil would be determined by your doctor.
In case of a missed dose of Proventil, patient has to use medication as soon as he or she remembers. If it is almost time for next dose, then the regularly scheduled period can be followed. The patient must not take two doses together in any case.
Proventil is classified under FDA’s pregnancy category C. There is little or no amount of this medication that passes onto the fetus or nursing baby.
Interactions
