Basic Information On Rapamune
Rapamune is and immunosuppressant drug; it lowers the effects of the immune system in the body. It is used as a prophylactic treatment for organ rejection in organ transplant, especially kidney transplant. The immune system helps the body to fight against any infections. Therefore, the same immune system can also fight against the transplanted organ and reject it. The drug acts by inhibiting the responses to the interleukin-2 (IL-2) which in-turn inhibits the B-cells and T-cells activation as well as proliferation. Thus, the cells do not complete the cell cycle and the progression from G1 to S phase of the cell cycle does not occur. Brand or generic Rapamune is preferred over other agents because its toxicity on the kidney is very low. Also, it can be used alone or in combination with other immunosuppressant agents.
