General Information on Razadyne ER
Razadyne ER is a medication given for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The generic name of this drug is galantamine.
Razadyne ER works by stopping the effects of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is a naturally occurring chemical in the body. This chemical is known to break down acetycholine which is important component to a person’s reasoning, thinking and memory abilities. Alzheimer’s disease patients and those suffering from dementia have been found to have a lack of acetylcholine.
Razadyne ER is used for treating mild and moderate cases of Alzheimer’s, but it is not a cure. This form of dementia does not have a cure, but Razadyne ER may be prescribed to slow down its progress. Razadyne ER may also be given for other medical purposes as well, but it is always taken with a doctor’s valid prescription.
Side effects of Razadyne ER
You cannot buy Razadyne ER if you have previously suffered from an allergy to galantamine. The signs of an allergy include the formation of hives, swollen throat or face, breathing problems, chest tightness and wheezing. If you find yourself suffering from these signs, you must seek immediate medical attention.
You must also stop taking Razadyne ER if you suffer from the following severe side effects- chest pain, coughing out blood, bloody stools, dangerously slow pulse, reduced urination, confusion, weakness, hot or dry skin and extreme thirst.
Apart from serious but rare side effects, Razadyne ER may also cause mild side effects. These side effects are only temporary, but you must inform your doctor if they turn severe or if they continue even after a long time. These mild side effects include mild headaches, tiredness, dizziness or lightheadedness, flatulence, nausea, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
Dosage of Razadyne ER
This medication must be taken as per the dosage prescribed by your doctor for you. Taking a larger dose of Razadyne ER may lead to an overdose. You may buy Razadyne ER as an extended release tablet, and it is available in the following forms- Razadyne ER 8mg, Razadyne ER 16mg and Razadyne ER 24mg.
The recommended daily dosage of Razadyne ER ranges from 16mg to 24mg. The starting dose is recommended to be maintained at 8mg in a day. After at least 4 weeks have passed, this dosage can be increased to 16mg per day. Once again, after at least 4 weeks have passed and depending on response to therapy, the dose is recommended to be increased to 24mg in a day. A dose stronger than 24mg has not been found to be useful enough.
You must not chew, crush or break Razadyne ER, as it is an extended release tablet. This means that the medication slowly enters the body over an extended period of time if it is swallowed whole. However, if the tablet breaks down in the mouth, it will result in a sudden release of the contents, which may cause an overdose.
Interactions
Adverse reactions may occur if Razadyne ER is taken along with certain other medications. Some of these medications include atropine, belladonna, clidinium, hysocyamine, scopolamine, paroxetine, methantheline, ketoconazole and mepenzolate.
