Rebif is a drug that belongs to the class of interferon. It is referred to as a disease modifying drug (DMD). It is used in the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis. In patients with multiple sclerosis the drug is used to postpone the physical disability accumulation. Additionally, it helps in reducing the frequency of clinical exacerbation associated with multiple sclerosis. The drug acts in several ways and has multiple mechanism of action. However, the precise mechanism of action of the drug in the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis is still not known. Brand or generic Rebif is sold only as a prescription drug. The drug is effective in controlling the progression of multiple sclerosis which is due to the anti-inflammatory properties of the drug.
Precautions / Side Effects For Rebif
Side effects of Rebif are chest pain, abdominal pain, unsteadiness, clumsiness, coughing, difficulty in swallowing, decrease in hearing, fainting, dizziness, flushing, itching, hives, muscle spasms, pelvic heaviness, pelvic discomfort or ache, stuffy/runny nose, skin lesions, sore throat, sneezing, swelling of the eyelids, face or lips, speech problems, trouble in breathing and wheezing. Other side effects of Interferon Beta-1a are seizures (or convulsions), suicidal thoughts and mood changes.
Certain side effects appear at the site of injection such as tenderness, swelling or reddening. Other side effects of Rebif drug which are rather common include tarry or black stools, diarrhea, chest pain, cough, chills, fever, pain, difficulty in urinating, flu-like symptoms (joint pain, headache and muscle pain), ulcers, white spots in the mouth or on the face, swollen glands, shortness of breath, unexplained weakness or tiredness and unusual bleeding/bruising. Rare side effects of Interferon Beta-1a include loss of appetite, ear pain, feeling of illness, painful-blisters on the body (shingles) and cold sores (or blisters) on the eyes, nose, lips or genitals.
Rebif Dosage
Rebif is administered as a subcutaneous injection 3 times in a week (preferably Monday, Wednesday and Friday). The effective and safe dose of the drug is considered to be 22 mcg and 44 mcg. The drug should be preferably administered at the same time each day (afternoon or evening). Depending upon the target dosage of 22 mcg or 44 mcg (whichever is recommended) the dose administration of brand or generic Rebif should be as follows: 1-2 weeks 20% of the target dose (for example, during the first 2 weeks only 4.4 mcg is administered by patients whose target dose is 22 mcg and 8.8 mcg by patients with target dose of 44 mcg); 3-4 weeks 50% of the target dose; 5 weeks and above 100% dosage.
