General Information on Remeron
Remeron is a psychiatric medication given for the treatment of major depressive disorder. The generic name of Remeron is mirtazapine, which belongs to the family of tetracyclic antidepressant drugs.
Remeron works by affecting certain chemicals within the brain and balancing their levels. The imbalance of these affected chemicals is considered to be a trigger for depression. Remeron increases the level of serotonin and norepinephrine-2 chemicals that elevate the mood of a person.
Apart from major depressive disorder, Remeron may also be prescribed for other psychiatric conditions on an individual basis.
Side effects of Remeron
You must not buy Remeron if you have previously suffered an allergy to mirtazapine or if you are currently on tryptophan.
Patients 24 years of age or younger may experience suicidal thoughts when they first take Remeron or any other antidepressant. Therefore, you would need to visit your doctor regularly to check for such signs, especially during the first 12 weeks of Remeron treatment.
You must let your doctor know whenever any of the following side effects surface or worsen- mood swings, behavioral changes, panic attacks, anxiety, sleeping problems, irritability, agitation, impulsive feelings, restlessness, aggression, hostility, physical or mental hyperactivity, increased depression, and suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-injury.
Remeron takes time to show its effects on the patient’s condition. It may take several weeks before any improvement is seen in the patient’s symptoms. Therefore, Remeron must be taken for as long as prescribed, even though you may not notice any positive changes. The patient is not advised to drink alcohol while on Remeron, as doing so may increase the intensity of certain side effects associated with this medication. Remeron slows down the reaction time and impairs a patient’s thinking, so you are recommended to avoid performing activities where you need to stay alert. Examples of such activities include driving and operating heavy machinery.
Dosage of Remeron
Remeron must be taken in the exact dosage as prescribed by the doctor. A larger dose should not be taken, and Remeron should also not be taken after the treatment is over. Remeron is available as an oral tablet, but the dosage strength can vary from Remeron 15mg to Remeron 30mg and Remeron 45mg.
The starting dosage recommended for all patients is 15mg per day as a single dose. The dosage is preferably given before sleeping at night. For treating major depressive disorder, the effective daily dosage ranges from 15mg to 45mg.
You may notice withdrawal symptoms and side effects when Remeron treatment is complete. In order to lower the chances of such withdrawal symptoms from occurring, it is recommended that the dosage be lowered gradually over a period of several weeks.
Interactions
You may also not be able to buy Remeron and use it if you have taken MAO inhibitors in the last 2 weeks. Serious and even life-threatening side effects may surface if Remeron is taken while an MAO inhibitor is still effective in your body.
