Basic Information On Restasis
Restasis is an immunosuppressive drug prescribed for the treatment of eye problems like inflammation of both the conjunctiva and cornea or chronic dry eye. However, it is not to be used for any type of eye infection. The immunomodulator cyclosporine restores natural tear production by inhibiting T-cell activation. Increased tear production may not be detected in patients using punctal plug or topical anti-inflammatory drugs. It does not work in patients having active ocular infection. Cyclosporine ophthalmic is available under the brand name Restasis as a 0.05% emulsion. The unique emulsion technology offers effective drug release to the ocular tissue. The detailed mechanism of action is unknown. It is suitable for all age groups depending on their condition.
Precautions / Side Effects For Restasis
Do not use brand or generic Restasis while wearing contact lenses. It is listed in the FDA’s pregnancy category C which means the side effects in an unborn baby are unknown. It is also advised not to use Restasis drug if one is breast-feeding a baby as it passes into human milk. To avoid contamination, keep the dropper sterile. It is best to avoid using other eye drops or similar medications along with cyclosporine.
You can use artificial tears while undergoing treatment with cyclosporine. You may adjust a missed dose by taking it as soon as you remember but never overdose. There are no serious side effects associated with brand or generic Restasis. Some common minor ones like blurred vision, itching, mild burning and stinging may be experienced but most of them are temporary. The most adverse effect seen is ocular burning. Its impact on patients having a history of herpes keratitis is not known.
Dosages For Restasis
Before using, ensure that the emulsion is white, uniform and opaque. Invert the vial a couple of times before administration for proper mixing. Use Restasis eye drops exactly as prescribed. Generally Restasis must be used twice a day roughly every 12 hours unless suggested otherwise by the physician. While using artificial tears, allow a gap of 15 minutes between each instillation. Remove contact lenses prior to use and wait for 15 minutes before replacing them. Use immediately after opening the vial and discard it soon after use.
