Reyataz is indicated to prevent HIV-1 infection from damaging the immune system. It blocks the enzyme HIV protease, which forms the functional proteins, in cells infected with HIV-1. The drug may be used to treat adults and children above 6 years.

Brand or generic Reyataz contains atazanavir sulfate, which is a category B drug as per FDA norms. As such, the medicine may not harm the fetus. However, if the mother’s infection is not carefully treated during pregnancy, the risk of passing the HIV infection to unborn baby remains.
