Salagen is indicated for the treatment of dry mouth caused due to reduced salivary secretion from salivary glands. It belongs to a class of drugs called cholinergic agonist. Dry mouth could result due to several conditions. Most individuals who are prescribed the Salagen drug undergo radiation therapy for head and neck cancers; dry mouth is one of the side effects of radiation therapy. That apart another condition which causes dry mouth is Sjögren's Syndrome. This medication does not cure the autoimmune disease but only alleviates the symptoms of dry mouth.
Side Effects/Precautions For Salagen
Side effects of Salagen or Pilocarpine include changes in vision with accompanying headache and sometimes dizziness. For patients who are being treated for dry mouth caused due to Sjögren's Syndrome, this side effect may rule out treatment with this medication as the disease also affects the eyes. Other side effects include increase in the rate of dehydration through increased sweating and increased urination. It is thus essential to increase the intake of fluids when on treatment with brand or generic Salagen medication.
Pilocarpine use may be ruled out if you have problems like glaucoma, heart problems, liver problems, and kidney and bladder problems. Salagen Dosage

Any further increase should be done only after assessment for a period of 12 weeks. The total daily dose of Salagen should not exceed 30 mg. For treating individuals with Sjögren's Syndrome, a total dose of 20 mg is recommended to be taken in divided doses of 5 mg four times a day. No dose adjustments are required for individuals with hepatic insufficiency. However, for moderate hepatic impaired, the recommended daily dose is 10 mg. This drug is not recommended for individuals with severe hepatic impairment.
