Basic Information On Sensipar
Sensipar is used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), where there is an elevation in the levels of parathyroid hormone in the body, which in turn results in irregular metabolism of calcium and phosphorous levels. The levels of calcium are also high in individuals with parathyroid cancer. Hence, the Sensipar drug is also prescribed to cancer patients with elevated blood calcium levels. The drug promotes osteoclastic activity or bone resorption and achieves its actions.
Side Effects/Precautions For Sensipar
Sensipar or Cinacalcet is known to cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. You may also experience loss of weight due to decreased appetite. Many individuals also complain of dizziness and weakness when on treatment with brand or generic Sensipar, as it results in changes to the metabolism. However, in case of persistent muscle pain and chest pain that does not go away you must contact your doctor. It is normal to feel slightly fatigued and exhausted with slight exertion when on treatment with this drug. If muscle pain however, is accompanied by numbness, slow activity and loss of strength, you may be required to stop the drug.
Cinacalcet may not be given to individuals with a history of heart disease and high blood pressure. If you are taking medications for epilepsy, then let your doctor know about it. It is not known if brand or generic Sensipar causes any problems to the fetus. However, due to hormonal imbalances, you would be advised against getting pregnant. If you discover that you are pregnant then let your doctor know right away. It is not known if this drug can be passed to an infant through breastfeeding. Do not start or continue breastfeeding without discussing the risks with your doctor.
Sensipar Dosage
The starting dose for individuals with secondary hyperparathyroidism caused due to chronic kidney disease is 30 mg. Dose increases are done no more frequently than once in two to four weeks and only after measurement of parathyroid hormone levels on weekly basis. The increase in doses are done in counts of 30 mg i.e. 60, 90, 120 and if required a big jump to 180 mg. For individuals with parathyroid carcinoma, the starting dose is 30 mg which can be increased by counts of 30 mg every two weeks if required.
