General Information on Sentinel
Sentinel is a flavored tablet which cures heartworm in dogs. One can buy Sentinel online only with a prescription from a veterinarian. Its beef flavor is made from proteins derived from soy and pork. It is the ideal monthly tablet for dogs and puppies who weigh at least two pounds and are four weeks old.
Sentinel flavored tablets contain Milbemycin oxime and Lufenuron. It is a versatile drug which eliminates roundworms, whipworms and hookworms along with heartworms. It works by breaking the gestation and adult stages of the larvae. The second ingredient Lufenuron is very effective in inhibiting the growth of fleas by destroying flea eggs and disrupting the lifecycle of the insect.
The worms destroyed are Ancylostoma caninum (hookworms), Dirofilaria immitis or heartworm, Toxocara canis (ascarids), and Trichuris vulpis (whipworms.) Dog lovers should consult their veterinarian and get a prescription to buy Sentinel as soon as possible because this is a monthly process which has to be carried out throughout the year. The drug can be easily mixed with food or given as a treat because of its flavored beef taste. It is the perfect protection against worms in the intestine. It is also safe for nursing or pregnant canine mothers.
Side effects of Sentinel
There are very rare reported side effects of Sentinel. Veterinarians can check for Milbemycin reactions before prescription to be on the safe side.
Vomiting and depression can surface in some dogs. In rare cases, it can lead to the loss of appetite and diarrhea.
Other dogs show signs of drowsiness on taking Sentinel. Seizures are also possible in rare cases. Itching and hives are also a possibility.
Special care should be given to the personal hygiene of the dog owner because roundworms and hookworms can be contracted by humans.
Dosage of Sentinel
Sentinel has to be administered once a month. It is preferable to give the medicine on the same date every month. If one forgets to give Sentinel, then it can be administered as soon as possible. The dose cannot be increased without the knowledge of the veterinarian.
Besides giving Sentinel to your pet every month, it is advisable to administer the drug all year round to ensure complete protection.
The common dosage for dogs in the weight range of 2lbs to 10lbs is 2.3mg/46mg. For dogs weighing 11lbs to 25 lbs, the recommended Sentinel dose is 5.75mg/115mg. 11.5mg/230mg is recommended for dogs weighing between 26lbs and 50lbs. Heavier dogs weighing up to 100lbs can be given a single dose of 23mg/460mg.
There are some medicines Sentinel may interact with. Caution is advised if the dog is getting antifungal treatment. Sentinel may interact with cyclosporine, ketoconazole, carvedilol, erythromycin, quinidine, clarithromycin, tamoxifen, diltiazem and spironolactone.
Sentinel should not be given if the same generic drug has been given as another branded medication. It also does not get rid of adult fleas. Separate treatment has to be given for such a condition. It is also recommended that raw meat not be given to the pet.
