Basic Information On Serc
Serc is used to treat symptoms of vertigo caused due to imbalances in the inner ear or due to build up of excess fluid in one ear, a condition called Ménière's disease. This condition is characterized by a persistent ringing sensation in the ear and loss of hearing, in addition to episodes of vertigo and balance problems. The Serc drug works by interacting with histamine receptors on blood vessel walls in the inner ear. This results in dilation of vessels thus improving supply and reducing fluid buildup.
Side Effects/Precautions For Serc
Serc or Betahistine is known to worsen symptoms in individuals with peptic ulcers. Individuals with a history of the disease are not prescribed this drug. The presence of adrenal tumors also precludes the use of brand or generic Serc in individuals with such problems. If you have bronchial asthma or any allergies to histamine medications, let your doctor know as symptoms can worsen when taken without any dose adjustments or supervision.
Betahistine is known to be secreted in breast milk. Breastfeeding is not advised during treatment. It is not known if this medicine can hurt the fetus. However, do not take it unless you have discussed the pregnancy risks associated with it. If you are lactose intolerant, you may develop allergic reaction to brand or generic Serc, as it contains a good amount of lactose. Common side effects that are reported include gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea, skin problems like itching and rash. You will also be advised against driving till satisfactory response has been achieved, as vertigo episodes during driving can prove dangerous.
Serc Dosage
The starting dose for treating vertigo and other symptoms related to fluid buildup like tinnitus is 8 to 16 mg taken three times a day. Serc should be taken with meals. The dose can be increased to 24 mg if satisfactory response has not been achieved. However, if side effects of the drug like gastrointestinal problems are not well tolerated, then the dose should be reduced. For maintenance, sometimes doses, as high as 48 mg have been prescribed. Caution must be exercised when giving this medication to individuals with a history of peptic ulcers.
