General Information on Simulect

Simulect is part of a group of medications given for the prevention of organ rejection after completing a kidney transplant operation. The generic name of Simulect is basiliximab, which belongs to the group of immunosuppressive agents. Simulect is injected intravenously into the body.

Simulect works by curbing the defense mechanisms adopted by the immune system of the patient. The immune system protects the body from infections, preventing several medical conditions from occurring. However, the very nature of the immune system is known to fight or reject a newly transplanted organ, as the body would initially treat the organ as a foreign entity.

Simulect, along with the other medications that form a part of an immunosuppressive treatment regimen, lowers the rate of organ rejection of a transplant.

Side effects of Simulect

Simulect make a patient more susceptible to bleeding due to small injuries or contracting a contagious disease. To ensure that this does not happen, you would have to undergo regular blood tests to ensure that your blood platelet count does not plummet.

Some patients may experience an allergy to Simulect. The signs of such a reaction would include the presence of hives, breathing problems, and swelling on the face or throat. You must inform the doctor if any of these signs are witnessed. Avoid getting into contact with people who have contagious diseases such as flu, cold, etc.

Some patients may experience severe side effects after being given Simulect. These serious side effects include painful urination, unusual weakness, easy bleeding or bruising, fever, chills, body aches, signs of flu or any infection, and sleeping problems.

Dosage of Simulect

Simulect is administered as a serum injected through a needle directly into a vein. This medication is administered only by a trained medical professional. The initial dosage is administered 2 hours before the transplant operation begins.

The second dosage of Simulect is administered 4 days after the transplant operation is complete. In The serum is injected slowly over a period of 30 minutes through an intravenous infusion.

The recommended dosage varies for adults and children. For adults, 2 doses of Simulect 20 mg are recommended. For children weighing less than 35 kg, the recommended dosage is 2 doses of Simulect 10 mg. Children who weigh more than 35kg are recommended to follow the adult dosage pattern. The second dose must not be given if the patient experiences allergic reactions to Simulect or if graft loss is noticed.
