Sinemet CR is a controlled release tablet which is used to treat tremor, muscle stiffness, and weakness caused due to Parkinson's disease. It is also used to treat other similar conditions like postencephalitic parkinsonism, symptomatic parkinsonism, encephalitis (brain fever) caused by carbon monoxide poisoning or manganese poisoning which may injure the central nervous system. The two ingredients of the Sinemet CR drug, carbidopa and levodopa, work together to relieve Parkinson's symptoms. While carbidopa prevents levodopa from being destroyed by vitamin B6, it is actually levodopa which counters the effect of Parkinson's disease. It corrects the transmission of brain signals and restores the chemical balance of the brain. This medication is not a permanent cure for Parkinson's. It only relieves the patient of its symptoms.
Precautions / Side Effects Of Sinemet CR
Sinemet CR contains carbidopa and levodopa in a sustained release combination. Its ingredients are released gradually over a period of 4 to 6 hours and is most effective when there is constant amount in the blood. Hence it is important to take it at the same time daily. You should not take brand or generic Sinemet CR if you have an undiagnosed mole or a history of melanoma. You should also not take this medication if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Tablet Sinemet CR 50-100 can be used in combination with Sinemet CR 25-100 tablet to provide as a substitute to 50-100 half tablet or to titrate to optimum dose.
