Basic Information On Singulair

Singulair belongs to the family of drugs called leukotriene receptor antagonists. It inhibits leukotriene. Leukotriene is a chemical produced by the body when an allergen, like pollen, is breathed in. This chemical swells the lungs and tightens the muscles around the airways, thus causing asthma. This medication is effective in curbing and relieving respiratory allergies like seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever). The Singulair drug is also used to treat runny nose and sneezing in pediatric patients over 2 years of age, children and adults. In patients above 15 years of age who are not taking this medicine for some other condition, it may also be prescribed for preventing bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the air passages in the lungs) caused due to exercise.

Precautions / Side Effects Of Singulair

Singulair contains Montelukast which may cause some common side effects like nausea, stomach upset or pain, stuffy nose, headache, indigestion, dizziness and cough. However, you should contact your doctor if you experience any of the serious allergic reactions like: aggressive behavior, irregular heartbeat, swelling of the mouth, itching, and mental or mood changes. You should not take brand or generic Singulair if you are sensitive to aspirin and other non-steroidal anti inflammatory agents. 4 mg and 5 mg chewable tablets of this medicine contain phenylalanine, and should not be taken if you have phenylketonuria.

Montelukast is not a fast-action medicine for emergency conditions. You should continue using your inhaler and any other medicines as prescribed. However, the dose inhaled may be reduced slowly. If you are taking the brand or generic Singulair, you should intimate you doctor about other medicines that you are taking, existing medical conditions, and other persistent side effects. You should also report to the doctor immediately in case you notice any neuropsychiatric events.

Singulair Dosage

Singulair is administered once a day in the evening. The recommended dose for small children 2 to 5 years of age is one 4 mg tablet or one pack of 4 mg oral granules. For children in the age group 6-14 years, one 5 mg chewable tablet should be taken while for adolescents and adults, the prescribed dose is one 10mg tablet daily. To prevent EIB, one 10 mg tablet should be administered 2 hours before exercise. Another dose of this medication should be administered within 24 hours of the previous dose. However, patients taking another dose of Singulair to treat chronic asthma should not take another dose to prevent EIB.
