Basic Information On Sintrom
Sintrom is used to prevent and treat blood clots in the veins. It is a blood thinner (anti coagulant) which helps the patients with thrombotic disorder. In this condition, normal flow of blood is obstructed, which leads to the formation of abnormal clots within the blood vessels and lungs. It does not dissolve the clots but prevents new clots from forming and stops existing clots from getting bigger. The Sintrom drug is also used to treat atrial fibrillation (an abnormal heart rhythm) linked with blood clots, and transient ischemic attacks, also called mini strokes. It works partly by obstructing the reuse of vitamin K in the liver. Vitamin K is needed by the body to help the blood coagulate and stop bleeding.
Precautions / Side Effects Of Sintrom
Simtron contains Acenocoumarol. It may cause bleeding gums, numbness, headaches, tingling of face, increased menstrual bleeding, paralysis and breathlessness. You should contact your doctor if these symptoms persist. You should also be alert to blood in vomit, or blood in urine and stools. Before you take brand or generic Sintrom, inform your doctor about history of allergies or other medicine you are taking.
Pregnant women must not take Acenocoumarol, as it can put them at a high abortion risk. Brand or generic Sintrom should not be taken if you are allergic to any of the ingredients of this drug, are undergoing anesthesia, have kidney or liver problems, have undergone a recent eye surgery or have poly arthritis. In case you miss a dose, take it as soon as you realize it but if it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double up, as it may cause bleeding. You should be under constant medical observation to be able to adjust your dose.
Sintrom Dosage
Regular coagulation tests should be performed to judge your sensitivity to anticoagulants and the dosage should be adjusted accordingly. The recommended initial dose is 4 mg-12 mg on day1 which can come down to 4 mg-8 mg on day 2. The maintenance dose again should be based on your blood coagulation time. The maintenance dose of Sintrom is usually between 1mg and 8 mg. It is based on your Quick value (International Normalized ratio) and the nature of your disease. Till the coagulation status is stabilized in the normal range, thromboplastin time should be measured daily. The blood sample for the test should preferably be taken at the same time of day.
