General Information on Surgam
Surgam is used for relieving inflammation and pain due to several musculoskeletal conditions including arthritis, sprains, back pain, dislocations or other injuries in the soft tissue. Active ingredient in the medicine is Tiaprofenic Acid, and it belongs to the class of NSAIDs. In some cases, this medicine is also used for relieving inflammation and pain after a surgery.
You can buy Surgam in the form of oral tablets. It works by blocking action of cyclo-oxygenase in the body. It blocks production of prostaglandins in the body which are produced when an injury or disease takes place. These chemicals are responsible for causing inflammation, swelling and pain in the body.
Side effects of Surgam
Surgam can increase your chances of developing a heart disease, heart attack or stroke. Therefore, you should inform your doctor beforehand if you are already suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol or if you smoke. You should immediately inform your doctor if you develop chest pain, ankle swelling or shortness of breath.
In some cases, Surgam can lead to a condition known as severe cystitis. Symptoms of such condition include increased frequency of urination, urgency to urinate, pain during urination or blood in urine.
NSAIDs can also lead to serious side effects of the gut, including ulceration, perforation or bleeding of intestinal or stomach lining. You have more chances of developing this condition if you are an elderly patient or if you have a history of an intestine or stomach related disorder. You should immediately notify your doctor if you notice symptoms of a stomach or intestinal bleeding. Such symptoms include tarry or blood stained stools or vomits with blood.
Sometimes, this medicine can also cause serious peeling or blistering on skin. Conditions that may take place include toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens Johnson syndrome or exfoliative dermatitis. You should immediately stop taking the medicine if you develop skin rash or sores inside the mouth.
Patients with any of the following conditions should use this medicine with caution:
- History of stomach or intestine related disorders, such as bleeding or ulceration
- Inflammatory disease in the bowel, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
- Decreased liver or kidney function
- Heart failure
- Heart disease caused due to inadequate flow of blood to the heart, such as angina, ischaemic heart disease
- Disease related to blood vessels in the brain, such as cerebrovascular disease
- Poor blood circulation in legs or feet arteries, such as peripheral arterial disease
- Raised fat levels such as hyperlipidaemia
- Diabetes
- Blood clotting disorder
- Disease affecting the connective tissue, such as systemic lupus erythematosus
Dosage of Surgam
Usually, your doctor will advise you to take one Surgam 300mg tablet twice in a day. Alternatively, you can also be advised to take one Surgam 200mg tablet thrice in a day.
In order to prevent stomach irritation, your doctor will advise you to take Surgam tablets along with food.
Interactions
Do not buy Surgam if you are already taking anticoagulants, analgesics, corticosteroids, cardiac glycosides, sulphonamides, diuretics or ACE inhibitors.
