Basic Information On Sustiva
Sustiva belongs to the family of medications known as non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It is an antiviral medicine used to treat HIV. It is a part of the Highly Active Anti Retro Viral Treatment. HIV causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The drug Sustiva prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cells from replicating rapidly and decreases the amount of virus in the body. It helps keep viral loads undetectable for a long time. It raises CD4+ cell or the T-cell count which improves the immune system of the body. It stops HIV from entering the nucleus of healthy CD4 cells. However, Sustiva cannot cure HIV, nor can it prevent HIV from passing to others. Sustiva received approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of HIV in 1998.
Precautions / Side Effects Of Sustiva
The active chemical ingredient of Sustiva is Efavirenz. It can cause severe psychiatric side effects like clinical depression, confusion, extreme fear, and suicidal thoughts. You should be under regular and careful medical observation to watch out for these symptoms. Any such symptoms must be urgently reported to your doctor. Brand or generic Sustiva must not be taken with the following medicines: midazolam (Versed), cisapride (Propulsid), triazolam (Halcion), or ergot medications like ergonovine (Ergotrate), dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45) or methylergonovine (Methergine). Taking Sustiva with these medicines can cause life threatening side effects.
You must not take Efavirenz if you are pregnant as it can harm the unborn baby. You should use two methods of birth control, like diaphragm with spermicide gel or a condom, for at least 12 weeks after stopping Sustiva. The HIV infection can pass onto the baby if the mother is not properly treated. You need to adjust the dose of brand or generic Sustiva, if you have high cholesterol or a liver disease.
Sustiva is taken in adjunct therapy with nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and/or protease inhibitor. The recommended daily dosage is 600 mg to be taken orally. You should take this medication on an empty stomach as taking it with food may aggravate the risk of adverse side effects. It should preferably be taken at bedtime, as bedtime dosing can increase tolerability of nervous system symptoms. If you are taking this medication in combination with voriconazole, increase the maintenance dosage of voriconazole to 400 mg every 12 hours and decrease Sustiva to 300 mg once daily. For pediatric patients, the dosage depends on the weight of the patient.
