Basic Information On Sutent
Sutent belongs to the family of oral medications called Receptor Tyrosine Kinase inhibitors (RTK inhibitors). It is an anti-cancer drug used to treat advanced kidney cancer (advanced renal cell carcinoma or RCC) and gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). It is used in place of Gleevec, when the patient cannot take Gleevec or Gleevec could not stop the cancer from growing. While Sutent is a primary drug for the treatment of RCC, it is a partial treatment for GIST used after the disease has progressed and imatinib mesylate is not tolerated by the patient. It is an angiogenesis inhibitor and it obstructs the action of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). It blocks the tumor cell growth and aims many enzymes on tumor cells and blood vessel cells. Many such enzymes are believed to cause angiogenesis (making of blood vessels).

Sutent contains Sunitinib Malate. It can cause itching, dark urine, pain in the right upper stomach area and yellow eyes or skin. Brand or generic Sutent can cause heart problems. Any symptoms of heart trouble like feeling dizzy, tired, abnormal heartbeats, swollen feet and ankles should be reported to your doctor. Sutent Dosage

This dose should be taken for 4 weeks which is followed by 2 weeks off. Depending on your individual tolerability and safety, the dosage can be increased or decreased by 12.5 mg. This medication can be taken with or without food. It should be administered with other concomitant medicines with minimal enzyme inhibition strength, as strong CYP3A4 inhibitors can increase the concentration of sunitib plasma. In case Sutent is given with a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor, it should be reduced to a daily dose of 37.5 mg.
