Tarka is a combination drug that is prescribed for hypertension or high blood pressure. It consists of an ACE inhibitor that inhibits the function of an enzyme that converts one form of the hormone angiotensin to another form. This constricts blood vessels and affects an increase in blood pressure.
Side Effects / Precautions For Tarka
Severe side effects of Tarka or Trandolapril/Verapamil include reduced urination and in some individuals it may stop completely. This is a dangerous condition as it can affect the kidneys, result in unwarranted blood pressure changes and also lead to sepsis. You may also notice changes in your heart rate, which has a bearing on your daily normal activity; you may feel tired with little or no exertion at all. Chest pain is another side effect. Jaundice is reported as a common liver related side effect caused by brand or generic Tarka tablets. Less serious side effects, which usually go away after a tolerance is built, include diarrhea, constipation, headache, joint and back pain.
Women are not advised to get pregnant during treatment with Trandolapril/Verapamil, as it is known to cause fetal injury. If you are pregnant, stop using the drug and contact your doctor immediately. It is also known to be excreted in the breast milk. So before breastfeeding discuss the risks associated with breast feeding with your doctor. If you are on medication for kidney or liver disease, then you may not be prescribed this medication. Diabetes and heart failure patients should inform their status to their doctors before beginning treatment.
Tarka Dosage
The treatment with brand or generic Tarka starts only after monotherapy with each of its constituents fail, or dose increase of individual constituent doses, cannot be made. The recommended starting dose is 2 mg of Trandolapril and 120 mg of Verapamil. The total dose can be taken in two divided doses. The increase in doses can be up to 4 mg for Trandolapril and upto 480 mg for Verapamil. For those who are replacing individual medication, the same doses can be used. This drug should be administered with food. Dose dependent side effects may warrant reduction of doses. Individuals with renal, hepatic and heart problems need dose adjustments if they have to be prescribed this drug.
