Basic Information On Tasigna
Tasigna is used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia that is Philadelphia Chromosome Positive (CML), in adult patients who have been recently diagnosed and are mostly in the chronic phase of the disease. The Tasigna drug is also used to treat accelerated phase of CML in adults who have not responded to prior treatment or have displayed resistance to the other treatment. Less serious side effects of Tasigna or Nilotinib include mild skin rash with itching that can resolve on its own or be helped with mild medication. You may also experience fatigue, diarrhea and constipation when on treatment. The intensity of these symptoms is not constant in most individuals. Serious side effects include sudden onset of headache with confusion and blurring of vision, jaundice, change in skin pallor, changes in heart rate and sometimes convulsions. On long term treatment with brand or generic Tasigna, most individuals also experience weight gain.
Nilotinib is known to cause sudden death in individuals with Long QT syndrome (a problem with heart beat pattern). You will not be prescribed this drug if have this condition or low levels of blood potassium or magnesium. Individuals with a history of heart and liver disease should inform their doctor about their condition before starting treatment with this drug. Fetal harm is likely during second and third trimester of pregnancy. Tasigna Dosage
The recommended dose of Tasigna for newly diagnosed CML patients is 300 mg taken twice a day. The medication should be taken with a 12 hour gap. For newly diagnosed patients, the starting dose can be 200 mg which can be increased to 300 mg if required. If QT interval problems are noticed in the ECG, dose reductions or discontinuing of treatment may be necessary until the problem is corrected.
