Basic Information on Tobi
This drug belongs to a class of medication called aminoglycoside antibiotics and is used to treat people with a certain inherited condition of cystic fibrosis and who also suffer from persistent lung infection with a certain kind of bacteria. This medication helps by stopping the growth of certain bacteria. It helps by removing the sticky mucus that plugs up the tube, passageways and ducts in the lungs and helps people suffering from cystic fibrosis improve their breathing.
Precautions / Side Effects for Tobi
Before you begin using Tobi or Tobramycin, inform your doctor if you are allergic to it or of any other medical conditions or allergies. Likewise, if you suffer from any hearing disorder, kidney problems, myasthenia gravis or Parkinson’s disease, inform your doctor prior to taking Tobi drug. Brand or generic Tobi is not recommended during pregnancy. However, contact your doctor and discuss the risks and benefits.
Just as in other medication, using Tobi or Tobramycin can also lead to certain side effects. If you are concerned about the side effects of using Tobi drug, discuss the risks and benefits of it with your doctor. Though many side effects can be managed, some may go away on their own after sometime. At times using brand or generic Tobi can cause hoarseness and change in voice, signs of hearing loss and decrease in urine flow. Check with your doctor immediately if any of these serious but rare side effects occur, wheezing, severe dizziness, rash, itching, swelling of face, tongue and throat and any other serious allergic reaction.
Tobi Dosage
The recommended dosage in adults and children above the age of six is one single ampoule of 300 mg administered BID for a period of 28 days. Ideally, the dosage should be taken at twelve hour intervals but in any case not less than six hours apart. This drug is administered in alternating periods of 28 days each. This means that after the first dosage period of 28 days, the therapy is stopped for a period of four weeks and is again administered BID for another 28 days. This drug is administered through a reusable nebulizer.
