Ventavis drug is a synthetic, prostacylcin PGI2 analogue. It is an inhalation solution that is supplied as single-usage ampoules. It is used to lower the increased blood pressure in the lungs. The drug is used as an inhalant, primarily in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) especially in patients who show symptoms of NYHA class III and IV. Ventavis is also used in treatment of other conditions, such as Raynaud’s phenomenon, ischaemia and scleroderma. The drug acts by dilating the pulmonary and systemic arterial blood vessels. Thus, it opens the blood vessels of the lungs. Additionally, brand or generic Ventavis also has its effect on platelet aggression. However, it is not known if this effect of the drug is relevant to reduction of the pulmonary hypertension.
Precautions / Side Effects For Ventavis
The common side effects of Lloprost include dryness in the nose, mouth or throat, throat irritation, coughing, deepening or hoarseness of the voice, lightheadedness, headache, dizziness, weakness, flushing, nausea, vomiting, pain in the jaws or jaw tightness, muscle cramps and trouble in sleeping. Ventavis Dosage
The initial dose of Ventavis is 2.5 mcg in form of inhalation, 6-9 times a day with a minimum time gap of 2 hours between each dose. The drug is administered through inhalation with the help of either Prodose® ADD® System or I-neb® ADD® System which are 2 devices for the drug delivery in the lungs. Based on the tolerability of the drug by the patient, the dosage of the drug may be increased to and maintained at 5.0 mcg. Otherwise the maintenance dose is 2.5 mcg. The maximum dose of brand or generic Ventavis on a daily basis is 45 mcg that is a 5 mcg dosage taken 9 times a day.
