General Information on Vetmedin
Vetmedin is used for treating congestive heart failure in dogs. Your veterinary doctor may ask you to buy Vetmedin if the cause of congestive heart failure in your pet is either dilated cardiomyopathy or DCM, or degenerative valvular disease or DVD. The generic name of this drug is Pimobendan.
This drug works in two ways:
Vetmedin is meant for oral administration only. The drug is available in the form of oral tablets, which comes in the following three strengths- Vetmedin 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, and 5 mg.
Side effects of Vetmedin
You should not buy Vetmedin if your pet has a known allergy to any ingredients present in this oral drug. Consult your veterinarian immediately if your dog experiences an allergic reaction after using this drug. Allergic reactions, if left unattended, may result in fatal complications. Symptoms that mark an allergic reaction in pets are: swelling, severe skin irritation or rashes, or difficulty breathing.
Vetmedin should not be administered to pets with aortic stenosis or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In addition, do not give this drug to pets that have asymptomatic heart disease.
This drug may cause the following side effects: lethargy, poor appetite, dyspnea, diarrhea, ataxia, azotemia, and weakness. Consult your veterinarian if your pet experiences any of these side effects.

It is not known if Vetmedin is safe and/or effective for pets younger than 6 months. Consult your veterinarian if your pet’s age is less than 6 months. Your veterinarian will decide if the benefits to your pet outweigh any possible risks.
Dosage of Vetmedin
The daily recommended dosage is 0.23 mg/lb divided in two doses, which may or may not be equal. The gap between the two doses should be approximately 12 hours. You should administer Vetmedin oral tablets with food. It is safe to split the oral tablets in 2 to ensure accurate dosing.
The response of each dog to this drug may be different. With that said, most pets show tangible improvement within 7 days of treatment.
You should store Vetmedin oral tablets at room temperature, between 18°-30°C. This drug is not listed for human use. Keep it away from the reach of young children.
Interactions
Vetmedin may interact with certain drugs. Let your veteriniarian know about any other drugs that your pet is being given. This will help in preventing unwanted drug interactions.
