Vivactil is indicated for the treatment of depression. It is a tricyclic antidepressant, and it works by interfering with certain naturally-occurring chemicals in a patient’s brain. The generic name of this drug is Protriptyline.

The excipients used in this drug are: carnauba wax, microcrystalline cellulose, dibasic calcium phosphate, anhydrous lactose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, polyethylene glycol, corn starch, hypromellose, propylene glycol, magnesium stearate, polysorbate 80, titanium dioxide, sodium starch glycolate. In addition, Vivactil 5 mg oral tablets include FD&C Red #40 and FD&C Yellow #6, and Vivactil 10 mg oral tablets include D&C Red #30 and D&C Yellow #10.

Side effects of Vivactil
Vivactil is contraindicated if:
- You have recently suffered from a cardiovascular attack

- Schizophrenia
It has not been conclusively established whether Vivactil is safe for lactating or pregnant women. Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding, planning to become pregnant, or are pregnant. Use this drug only if your doctor approves its usage.
Dosage of Vivactil
The dosage of Vivactil may be different for different patients. The usual daily dosage range for adult patients is Vivactil 15 mg - 40 mg administered in 3-4 small doses. If required, a higher dosage up to 60 mg may be prescribed. A daily dose exceeding 60 mg is not recommended.
Interactions
Medicines that can interact with Vivactil may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Tramadol
- Anti-psychotic drugs such as quetiapine, ziprasidone, chlorpromazine, clozapine, haloperidol, and others
- Antiarrhythmic drugs such as quinidine, flecainide, or propafenone
- Cimetidine
