Xeloda pharmacologically known as capecitabine, belongs to the class of medicines called anti-metabolites which are used for the treatment of breast and colorectal cancer. The Xeloda drug is also prescribed to patients with stage III colon cancer after the surgery. The drug inhibits DNA synthesis in the body thus interfering with the cancerous cell growth. The Xeloda drug works by interfering with the growth of the cancerous cell and this might hinder normal cell growth also at times and hence the use of the medication should be decided keeping in mind the potential risks. Brand or generic Xeloda is also not advisable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, except for under life-threatening situations. This is a 3 week cycle with the medication to be taken for about 2 week period followed by a period of 1 week rest. The tablet is to be swallowed orally with water after meal within 30 minutes. Also medical attention is required for initial dosage details for elderly people or people with kidney or liver impairments.
The oblong biconvex tablets of Xeloda are required to be stored in tight bottles at controlled room temperature between 15 °C to 30 °C.
