General Information On Zegerid
Zegerid is used to treat ulcers, which includes gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers. It is also indicated in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and stress ulcer prophylaxis. The medication is a combination of Omeprazole and Sodium Bicarbonate.
Omeprazole, one of the active ingredients in Zegerid, belongs to a family of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors, while Sodium Bicarbonate belongs to a group of medicines known as salt solutions, which are used as irrigating solutions.
Omeprazole works by inhibiting the production of acid in the stomach. Sodium bicarbonate acts as a buffer which allows the medication to dissolve completely without getting affected by the acid in the stomach.
Zegerid is available in the form of a capsule and powder for oral suspension. The capsule and powder for oral suspension are supplied in two strengths- Zegerid 20mg and Zegerid 40mg, where the strength of the medication denotes the amount of Omeprazole present in the medication.

The recommended dosages to treat different medical conditions are-
- Recommended dose to treat duodenal ulcer - 20mg once a day. The treatment period is 4 weeks
- Recommended dose to treat gastric ulcers – 40mg once a day. The treatment duration is 4-8 weeks.
- Recommended dose to treat stress ulcer prophylaxis – Initial dose of 40mg followed by another 40mg dose in the next 6-8 hours. After the initial dose, the patient is required to take 40mg once daily for the next 14 days. Zegerid oral suspension is used in this treatment.
You can take the recommended dose anytime during the day or at bedtime. Take the dose on an empty stomach one hour prior to your meal.

Zegerid may interact with other medicines you are using and cause side effects. It may interact with medicines such as Ampicillin, Diazepam, Clarithromycin, HIV medications, Phenytoin, or specific diuretics. This is not a complete list of medications that may interact with Zegerid.
