Basic Information On Zometa

Zometa is recommended for treating bone related problems, when certain types of cancer (multiple myeloma) have spread to the bones. It helps to prevent further spreading and reduces the effects of the cancer on the bones. The cancer causes bones to release excess calcium into the blood. Zometa drug is biophosphonate and reduces the quantity of calcium released into the blood to control the skeletal related ailments, destruction of the bone material, for example risk of fracture or compression of the spinal cord. The drug may also be used to treat osteoporosis in women past their menopause and to build bone mass marrow in men.

Precautions/ Side Effects For Zometa

Brand or generic Zometa is not chemotherapy. It contains a drug called bisphosphonate. Observing suggested precautions helps you to take maximum advantage of medication with minimum side effects. Before starting therapy with Zometa, undergo any dental procedures that have been pending. Take calcium supplement (500 mg) and vitamin D (400 IU) orally every day. Inform your doctor if you have history of aspirin sensitivity. Your doctor will prescribe necessary tests to confirm that your kidneys and blood are in suitable state to Zoledronic acid. Consume copious quantity of fluids before taking the infusion. Avoid pregnancy, breast-feeding, smoking, alcohol and any serious dental procedures, during the medication. Exercise (like walking) to suit your ability and balance with rest.

Some of the possible side effects with brand or generic Zometa are symptoms that resemble flu, namely, fatigue, fever, nausea, vomiting. The red blood cell count may drop and you may experience, difficulty in breathing. There may be pain in the bones and loss of appetite. Zometa Dosage

The maximum recommended dose of Zomaeta is 4 mg, given intravenously as an infusion, once in three or four weeks. Each infusion should be administered gradually, over a period of minimum 15 minutes. Saline hydration is an integral part of this therapy and will be initiated immediately. The output of urine must be 2 lts per day, as soon as possible.
