Zomig is recommended for treating acute migraine in adults. The migraine may be with or without aura (flashes of light in front of the eyes). Migraine is characterized by throbbing and intense pain, generally on one side of the head and which may keep shifting sides. Some people may suffer in the forehead also. Migraine headache is caused by enlargement of the blood vessels surrounding those nerve fibers, curling around the arteries in the brain. The enlargement of the blood vessels prompts the nerve fiber to release chemicals, which cause the inflammation, which further worsens the enlargement in a cascading effect. The migraine activates the sympathetic nervous system setting off vomiting, nausea or diarrhea. The sympathetic syndrome also delays passing of stomach contents into the small intestines. As a corollary, oral medication also takes time to enter the small intestine and provides relief. Zomig drug disintegrates orally to provide faster relief.
Precautions/ Side Effects For Zomig
Brand or generic Zomig tablets disintegrate in the mouth. The medicine is to be taken only if the migraine has been medically confirmed. Do not take the medicine for ordinary headaches or for treating children. If you have a history of any heart disease or hypertension, discuss the same with the doctor. Inform your doctor about all other medication that you may be taking to prevent drug-interaction related complications.
Brand or generic Zomig has shown severe cardiac symptoms in rare cases. You may experience, common and less severe side effects like numbness of the skin, prostration, loss of energy, dizziness, feeling tight in the neck or chest, unnatural warmth, nausea or vomiting. Consult your doctor in case you observe rash, breathlessness. Generally, the adverse reactions will become less serious by change of dose.
Zomig Dosage
Start Zolmitriptan with the lowest dose which is generally 2.5 mg. You may break the Zolmitriptan tablet into half for lower doses. Take the medicine when you experience the onset of an attack, with or without food. If the headache persists or returns, you may repeat the dose once after a gap of two hours. Do not repeat the dose further, if the second dose also does not help consult your doctor. Do not exceed 10 mg as total dosage in a 24-hour period.
