Full information about Aldactone

General Information On Aldactone

Aldactone is used in the treatment of edema or fluid retention caused by cirrhosis of the liver or congestive heart failure. Aldactone is also used to treat hyperaldosteronism or aldosteronism, a medical condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive aldosterone. Aldactone is also indicated in the treatment of hypokalemia or low blood potassium levels. The generic name of this drug is Spironolactone, and it is available in the form of oral tablets.

Aldactone works by inhibiting the activity of a hormone called aldosterone. Aldosterone plays an important role in regulating the fluid retention process. In patients with cirrhosis of the liver and congestive heart failure, the adrenal glands produce excess aldosterone. This in turn leads to fluid retention and loss of potassium.

Aldactone helps the body get rid of excess water and retain potassium, which is why it is also referred to as a potassium diuretic drug.

In addition to Spironolactone, the active ingredient, Aldactone oral tablets also contain the following excipients: calcium sulfate, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, povidone, flavor, iron oxide, corn starch, titanium oxide, and polyethylene glycol.

Side effects of Aldactone

You should not buy Aldactone if you have a known hypersensitivity to Spironolactone or any other ingredients present in it. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a hypersensitive reaction after taking an Aldactone oral tablet. Symptoms of a hypersensitive reaction are: skin rashes, itching, facial flushing, hives, or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Aldactone is contraindicated if you have hyperkalemia or kidney disease. Patients who are taking other potassium diuretics or potassium supplements should avoid Aldactone.

Common side effects of Aldactone are: stomach pain, constipation, gas, headache, vomiting, nausea, or dizziness.

Rare but serious side effects of this drug include: light-headedness, drowsiness, restlessness, uneven heartbeat, confusion, muscle weakness, muscle pain, numbness, shallow breathing, jaundice-like symptoms (yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, black or tarry stools, low fever, mild stomach ache, or nausea), tremors, or shallow breathing. You must inform your physician if you experience any of these side effects during treatment.

The safety of Aldactone in pregnant and lactating women is not known. Consult your doctor before using this drug if you are pregnant or nursing a child.

Dosage of Aldactone

This drug is available in the following strengths: Aldactone 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg. The exact dosage varies from case to case depending on the patient’s medical condition, medical history, and response to the treatment.

The recommended starting dose for the treatment of edema or fluid retention is Aldactone 100 mg per day. The recommended dosage for the treatment of hypokalemia or low blood potassium is Aldactone 25-100 mg per day. The recommended dosage for long-term treatment of hyperaldosteronism is Aldactone 100-400 mg a day.

You should take your dosage with water. If Aldactone causes epigastric distress, take the dose with food.
